We had a lecture with Chris Goodwsen on the 8th October. He graduated at Norwich University College of Arts and then went to Abertay University to get a Masters in professional game development.
He started of wanting to become a Concept Artist however he decided to drop that dream as you needed to know a lot about colour texture and the different colour palate. I was interested in this as being a concept artist is something that I am really interested in and have been ever since I first looked at the art work on bonus disks from movies and games.
Chris spoke about how he started of being a traditional artist using pencil, paint, chalk etc as he was afraid of working on 3D because of using the mechanics and the fact it is very mathematically, which is a reason as to why I’m not looking forward to using 3D mechanics as I’m not strong with maths.
Chris spoke about how modern game companies now have special areas of designers e.g. Character artists, Environment artists, etc. this helped him choose to become a 3D character designer as he was always designing characters and it was something he always enjoyed.
When it came to drawing and designing characters he spoke about how life drawing was very important as it helped him understand how the human body works in movement along with the different muscle groups.
To begin with he was interested in Horror genre and designed a lot of horror based characters as he was inspired by Del Torro and he showed us his idea of a horror fairy tale. He then explained how his ideas developed and told us about how we should start of by doing quick 3-5 min thumbnail sketches as our first idea is most likely not our best.
Finally he spoke about how he went to Abertay University and was part of a team making a kids game and he was lead character designer and it was his job to ensure his other artists met deadlines and the work was up to scratch. He then warned us about how much writing was required and the amount of work which was needed and how badly the credit crunch has affected the game industries, his example was him applying for a placement where there was 3 jobs and 600 applicants.
His final advice was to keep drawing and keep on working!
